An understanding of the natural world and what’s in it is a source of not only a great curiosity but great fulfilment” – David Attenborough.

Introducing ‘Nimbus’ for AW20. Our newest shade of British Wool, inspired by the deep grey tones of the nimbus clouds. “Nimbus” comes from the Latin word for “rain” which we get plenty of here in the UK.

Cumbria, one of the wettest counties in Britain, is home to the Blue Faced Leicester, providing wool for all of our British Wool garments. These elegant sheep are deservedly among the most popular of all British breeds due to their fine, soft, semi-lustrous fleece. Despite BFL’s softness, the fibre is also hard-wearing and holds its block wonderfully, making it ideal for both more durable items.

The Nimbus Hudson Aran & Waffle Crew will be available soon.

In this series of posts, join us as we venture around the world getting to know some of our stockists and the exciting cities they’re situated. Our journey continues across the pond to Indianapolis: the state capital of Indiana. Here we visit our friend Tommy at James Dant: Purveyor’s of Men’s Goods. What’s great about Tommy, and how we’ve built a great relationship over the last few seasons working together, is not only his passion to sell brands that offer great quality products, but his drive to actually represent the brand. That’s why, with our proud heritage story and his attentiveness to the “whole picture”, Tommy is an excellent ambassador to Peregrine. This is a must visit for a first-class retail experience.

Tell us a bit about yourself and the city you live in

“James Dant is not only the name of the shop, but also my namesake. I was named after my dad, Thomas James Dant. The shop is located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Some call the midwest the heart of the country, and I think I would have to agree. We’re kind people. Everyone is friendly, yet with a chip on their shoulders. I think that’s why I opened the shop. There’s always been something to prove in Indiana. Something to be done that’s never been done here. The city has grown immensely in the last 7 years. We’ve had our cultural awakening and a bit of a renaissance if you will. One of the best things to do in Indy is walking the Canal on a spring day or visiting one of our many parks just on the outskirts of the city. If you’re looking for a world-class experience, you must visit the Indy 500 for the Month of May. Whether it’s down in the pits with drivers or up in the stands watching the race, there are hundreds of ways to experience the biggest race in the world!”

Tell us about your store and its ethos

“Our brand was founded on an ethos of buying better and therefore buying less, although that’s not always the case. It’s hard not falling in love with these brands which ultimately leads to heavy levels of support and repeat business. We want to work with brands who think about their impact. That should be from all angles. Most major brands choose one facet, like sales, to be their main driving factor. We don’t let sales guide our ultimate goal of building a better planet for everyone. We think people should be paid a living wage. We think brands should work really hard to limit their single-use plastic waste. We believe the better, longer-lasting clothing you buy, the less you’ll contribute to the waste our industry as a whole and fast fashion creates. Opening in Indiana, we felt we could be a leader in this market – a guide for other businesses it’s possible to accomplish that mission in a state whose politics don’t always coincide with the idea of a healthier planet. I think people everywhere can get behind that concept.”

Why do you stock Peregrine?

“When Peregrine reached out, it was perfect timing. We had been playing in this grey area between heritage and contemporary, and we felt Peregrine’s story landed smack dab in the middle. The allure of an English brand, still made in England was something that gripped our customers instantly. The waxed jackets and Harris tweeds were right up our alley. When we heard the story of a factory that had been in operation in England for over 200 years, we couldn’t pass on that. And to work with another brand that builds garments to last – pieces that get better with age – we knew Peregrine had to land on our shelves. Our favorite piece in the line every year is the Bexley Jacket. The black variation that now seems to be a staple in the lineup will always have our hearts; but, don’t overlook the mustard.”

What measures have you taken to help customers shop with you during the current climate?

“In the beginning days of closing our doors, this was not easy. The transition from a specialty clothing store dealing with one-on-one customer interactions with a heavy focus on customer service, to an online version of that was hard. We had to find a way to transfer that experience. Our initial reaction was to just tell the story. We started filming from facing videos with our phones to tell people how we were doing. That turned into telling people more detailed stories about the product we carried. That snowballed into thanking individual customers via Instagram for their orders. And here we are, a full month into this global pandemic, and we’re surviving. It’s a beautiful thing to be involved in. We’re watching people vote with their dollars – some who may be just as insecure about all of this as we are. For that, we are immensely grateful and will continue to find ways to work with brands who give back and do their part to see us through this ordeal.”

In this series of posts, join us as we venture around the world getting to know some of our stockists and the exciting cities they’re situated. For our next stop, we travel to Seoul: the vibrant capital of South Korea and one of the leading cities for fashion and technology. Here we visit our new friends at Barbershop: a lifestyle store offering a wide scope of brands from all around the world. These guys seriously know their brands and you’ll be sure to discover something new aswell as meeting some familiar, historical favourites!

Tell us a bit about the city you live in

“Seoul is a very fast pace and modern city with many people! Communication between one another and public transportation makes the city a convenient place to discover many interesting places all over the city. I would recommend the Korean Gyeongbokgung palace in Gangbuk instead of the more modern region of Gangnam: where the immensely popular song “Gangnam Style” was set! If you’re looking for a more traditional side of Seoul then visit the old town that surrounds this beautiful palace. This area also includes the Bukchon Hanok village where you can roam the streets and see traditional Korean homes. Of course, our store is also located in the old town right next to the palace!”

Seoul also has an amazing street food scene. You must visit the Gwangjang market: one of the oldest markets in South Korea. Here you can try snack foods at amazing prices such as savoury pancakes, rice cakes, seaweed rolls and a range of fresh meats and fish.

Tell us a bit about your store and its ethos

“We are a store in Seoul that started 10 years ago in 2010. We are an independent that discovers and introduces good brands and companies with a rich history of over 100 to 250 years and also brands that have history with our customers! The village in which our store is located is the only area in which the roads have not changed for 500 years. That’s why, in this historic village, a history of quality products is key for us”

Why do you stock Peregrine?

“Peregrine is a traditional knitwear company with a rich history going back to 1796. Of course, the quality is also excellent. I like Peregrine’s knitwear as it’s very signature look to their brand. I bought knitwear from them so that the store has a greater variety. They also have a great range of British wax jackets which we will introduce for the AW season”

As the SS20 season is your first season with us, what’s your thought on the collection?

“As the season is heading from spring to summer, I recommend Peregrine’s Zero Waste knitwear. The Zero Waste polo shirts and tees are knitted in 18 gauge using organic cotton: a seamless garment with excellent fit, no pilling. They are cool, environmentally friendly knits. High quality, elegant yet functional”

Barbershop, 17 Jahamun-ro 12-gil, Changseong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea, 03043

We have held a Q&A session with Managing Director and Head of Design, Tom Glover about his design process. It is often a stage that the consumer doesn’t see but it is another step that makes Peregrine more traceable.

Where do you get inspiration from?

I get a lot of inspiration from travelling and people watching. Fashion trade shows are a great way of seeing different fashions and styles from around the world. When it comes to designing a collection I like to have a story in mind and work around a theme.

Do you get inspiration from current trends, new trends and customer feedback?

I am interested in all trends, old and new, a lot can be dictated by previous success and listening to what our customers want and like from existing ranges. We tweak the good designs, to improve and adapt to global trends.

Do the practicalities of a garment play a big role in design?

Practicality plays a huge factor in every garment I design. The Peregrine customer wants to be able to wear our garments in many different environments and situations, which makes design details and fabric selection very important.

Being a Made in England brand and retail price is also a huge factor. I want to offer the best price to customers, therefore I have a price point in mind when developing a garment. For example, if I want to sell a garment at a certain price, the manufacturing time is crucial.

How do you research the best fabrics for specific garments? Quality and sustainability?

I visit many different shows to see what new fabrics are coming through and want to stay competitive with prices. For us, the majority of our range is wool knitwear which we spin ourselves, therefore my main focus is the colour selection. We always consider sustainability and traceability for all our garments as we are a Made in England brand.

With our jackets, I work closely with the best mills in the UK and every season I work with them to develop new products and improve existing fabrics to suit our needs. It is important to work together and evolve an existing product to suit the current market

Once a sample is produced how do you test it out?

It’s important to see how the garments fit, pockets, drape in the environment it will be worn. Testing samples is mainly down to fit as we have already tested the fabrics before we put them into a sample.

Once the sample is finalised, what is the next step?

Once a sample is as we want, we curate the collection, colours and fabric. From here we finalise the collection, before making salesman samples for our global customers. We will then take on feedback from our wholesale customers and retailers around the world who test the garments before they go into production.

Not all woollen garments need to be regularly washed as they are antibacterial and anti-odour but we have put together a step-by-step guide as to how to safely wash our jumpers.

Step one

Make sure to choose a wool safe wash. We sell Shear Delight which is contains lanolin and Jersey milk to make sure your wool garments are wonderfully soft.

Step two

Turn your jumper inside out and fill up your sink with cold water.

Step three

Lather up the Shear Delight Wool Wash bar in the water until you are happy with the amount. The water should be slightly opaque.

Step four

Submerge your jumper in the water and squeeze it gently so that the jumper is fully soaked.

Step five

Leave your jumper submerged in the water and soak for 20 mins.

Step six

Drain the dirty water away and refill the sink with clean cold water and rinse the jumper.

Step seven

Drain the water away and gently squeeze the excess water out. DO NOT ring you jumper as it can misshape the jumper.

Step eight

Place your jumper on a flat surface and gently reshape. Leave your jumper until it is fully dry.

Shear delight is available to purchase in our store.

Britain has created some of the world’s greatest and most well-known brands in the world and Lanigan & Hulme display a fantastic array of them, which is one thing that we look to with supreme pride! Innovation is undoubtedly one of the best qualities that Britain possesses and, equally, heritage and tradition are at the core of what these brands always manage to work with and showcase, season upon season.

We have created a one stop shop space, which is just as social as it is functional for purchasing your favourite clothing, footwear and accessories. You can also be forever safe in the knowledge that you are being guided and advised by an experienced peer who is just as passionate about style and quality as you are.

Manchester was “Cottonopolis”: the place for textiles. Over time we plan to have our own L&H label made here in Manchester!”

Why do you stock Peregrine?

“We stock Peregrine as it’s British made, timeless classic pieces that will stand the test of time. Also, some of the collections are made here in Manchester. The Hudson Aran Jumpers are a firm favourite with our customers.”

What measures have you taken to help customers shop with you during the current climate?

“With the current crisis, we have added Gift Vouchers on our website so customers can support us and use them when we finally open again, also we have added 10% off all orders and Free Delivery to UK orders on our website during the period of time that we are closed. Also, we are hand delivering Manchester orders (safely of course).”

In this series of posts, join us as we venture around the world getting to know some of our stockists and the exciting cities they’re situated. For our first stop, we journey to Strasbourg in the North Eastern region of France to visit our friends at Goodvibes: a contemporary store for Mens and Ladieswear.

Tell us a bit about the city you live in

“Strasbourg is a beautiful city and capital of the Alsace region. The city centre, surrounded by the river ‘Ill’, is great for history with buildings such as the Cathedral of Strasbourg. There is always a little wind that runs around the cathedral which, legend says, is the devil trying to enter! Alsace is historically known for local food so Strasbourg is a very nice place to discover French gastronomy with top restaurants and bars serving high quality dishes. All of this can be enjoyed by bicycle as the city centre is closed to cars making the area a 2 wheel paradise! All your shopping can be done by bike as you cruise along the cycling paths. You might even decide to cycle over to Germany which can be done within a 30 minute ride! Of course, there are lots more things to do and see so if you want to come over, pop by our store or send us an email and we will give you all the tips you need to have a great time!”

Tell us about your store and its ethos

“Goodvibes opened in 1993. Since then we have been providing fashion that is original, ethical and at a fair price. When customers visit our store for the first time, their first thought is that the store is very “original” and “different”. Customers are so used to seeing the same brands on the high street so when you push through our door you will see brands that you might not know! We prefer selling products that are fair and high quality instead of brands that are greater known around the world.
We have some great small French labels, an Italian men’s trouser manufacturer , Russian jackets and, of course, Peregrine Clothing!”

Why do you stock Peregrine?

“We choose to sell Peregrine Clothing because they correspond exactly with our philosophy. Peregrine is a fair business who sell authentic garments at a fair price! They use exceptionally good quality British wool for their jumpers along with modern English style. They also have an impressive long line of heritage as clothing manufacturers”

Goodvibes, 57 + 66 Grand Rue, 67000, Strasbourg, France

After much anticipation, we are excited to introduce our Zero Waste collection. This season we’ve created a collection of men’s t-shirts and polos that are made with zero waste materials.

As a knitwear brand we wanted to stick to what we do best, knitwear, so we decided to combine our summer classic t-shirts with knitwear. Our design inspirations come from all-time classics that will never go out of style. From Breton stripes to a classic polo shirt we’ve got you covered.

At a time when more people are becoming more conscious about sustainability and knowing where their clothes are made, we believe it is important to carefully monitor the waste in clothing. This is why we have developed this capsule range of super soft organic cotton garments. The Zero Waste range is made on 18 gauge machines, from NILO organic cotton. The cotton we use is BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) regulated Egyptian cotton, which is simply the best. The cotton has some amazing properties:

This range mirrors Peregrine’s values as a company. We believe clothes should have a minimal impact on the environment. In a world where fast fashion is an ever-growing industry, we have decided to take it back to quality over quantity. As with everything we make, this collection is 100% made in England.

We have four different styles in our Zero Waste collection: The Knitted Polo, Emery Polo, Knitted Tee, Breton Tee, so there is a style for everyone.

For years, dad jokes have undoubtedly had a bad rep. Viewed by generations of embarrassed offspring as cringe-worthy, bad taste or just downright crap, so-called dad jokes have never received the comedy kudos they so thoroughly deserve.

But today, all that is about to change…

For this year’s Father’s day we decided to appreciate their cracking sense of humour. Often dry, sarcastic and well, not funny at all, dad jokes aren’t for everyone but here at Peregrine we truly appreciate the genius behind them.

We ran a competition asking you for your top Dad joke and boy did we get some crackers. No Monday morning will ever match up to the morning we spent sifting through the entries! You can find our winner and a selection of our favourites below.

•  As is customary when dad jokes are involved, prepare to laugh, cry and cringe in equal measure…

•  What training do you need to be a litter collector? None, you just pick it up as you go along!

•  A Roman walks into a bar, sticks two fingers up to the barman and says, “Five beers please.”

•  A furniture store keeps calling me. All I wanted was one night stand.

•  Dogs can’t operate MRI scanners…. but catscan

•  My son asked me to stop singing Oasis songs in public… I said maybe

•  RIP boiled water. You will be mist.

•  Want to hear a joke about construction? Nah, I’m still working on it.

•  Dad: Be careful of those trees over there.
Daughter: Why? The sky is clear, there’s no chance of lightning.
Dad: I don’t know, really… they just look really shady to me.

Summer Sun

What is summer without an al fresco party that plays out beneath grey skies while people shield their drinks from drizzle and you shiver in shorts?

Pragmatism (i.e. checking a weather app now and then) beats dressing for the day you hope will happen. But you can still keep your (beer) glass half full.

For the glass half-empty types we also have a range of lighter cotton knits – including our Milton Sweatshirt made from Recover recycled plastic and cotton. Available in Navy and Grey they complement almost any outfit and are great to throw on when the clouds drift past the sun.
